Flyers Take LeadArchived from 1999-2000 season. | |
Rookie goalie Brian Boucher made 27 saves as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the New Jersey Devils 4-2 Thursday night to take a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference finals.
"We have enough veterans to knock each other down," Rick Tocchet said. "We know it's 2-1, and I hate to say it, but big deal. It's a good win but we have to stay on an even keel." Tocchet continued his heroics by scoring a goal and adding an assist. Keith Primeau had two assists and Mark Recchi, Keith Jones and Simon Gagne also scored for the Flyers, who won their second straight game after losing the series opener. "More than anything we just felt we had to show people that we could play in this building," Primeau said. "I just sensed that our guys the last couple of days were focused for the challenge and we came up with a huge effort." Boucher made the save of the series in the second period as he stopped Patrik Elias on a short-handed breakaway by rolling on his back and throwing his glove over to stop the puck in a Hasek-like fashion. "I tried to get him with the pokecheck. He went around it and I was desperate and threw my arm at it," Boucher said. "I got lucky there because he made a great move. If it gave our team a boost, great. It was just desperation. You feel like you're beat when you miss the pokecheck. I got lucky." "I knew he was going to pokecheck me, and I didn't finish," Elias said. "We could've tied the game, 2-2, and instead we get scored on." Claude Lemieux and Scott Niedermayer scored for the Devils, who outshot the Flyers 29-21. New Jersey now has almost a must-win situation in Game 4 on Saturday at home. "It's a desperate hockey game, not doubt about it," Devils center Jason Arnott said. "It's a do-or-die game. We have to go into it thinking we have to win the game." |
