Pat Verbeek became the 28th player in NHL history to reach 500 goals by scoring twice in the Detroit Red Wings' 2-2 tie with the Calgary Flames.
"I'm just out of words. It's exciting," said Verbeek. "You start the year with a new team and wonder if they believe in you." Verbeek won the Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars last season before signing with the Red Wings as a free agent on Nov 10. "I was excited. It was one of those deals, I finally did it," Verbeek said. "When you get to a new team, you wonder if you're going to fit in. Getting it as a Red Wing was the last thing I thought would happen." The Red Wings have one win in their last four (1-2-1) after being unbeaten in eight straight. Detroit trails St. Louis by six points for the Central Division title. "It's a long shot to catch them now," Red Wings defenseman Larry Murphy said. "But we have to play as well as we can to finish the season. We have to make sure we play well and then deal with whoever we play in the playoffs." Calgary has only one win in their last nine (1-6-2). They are four points behind Anaheim and San Jose for the final Western Conference playoff berth with eight games to play. "We're not a team that's going to hang 'em up. We never have all year," said Flames coach Brian Sutter. "We've been this close all year, so this is no different. Every point is vital. The point tonight was very important, very, very important." |
