The Detroit Red Wings prevailed in the showdown of the NHL's conference leaders with a 3-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils.

"It was a good game with a lot of intensity," said Detroit goalie Chris Osgood, who stopped 35 shots. "When the game started, the teams got fired up really good."

Kirk Maltby, Vyacheslav Kozlov and Sergei Fedorov scored for the Red Wings, who have won four straight following a season-high five-game winless streak.

"It's been a good four games," Detroit coach Scotty Bowman said. "We played good teams and got three wins in a row at home."

Devils Jay Pandolfo needed 84 stitches to close cuts on his forehead and above his left eye after he was checked hard into the boards behind the Detroit net by Mathieu Dandenault.

Pandolfo collapsed right after the hit in pool of blood, but for some unknown reason the play wasn't stopped. Devils' coach Robbie Ftorek was so angry that he threw a section of the team bench on the ice.

"I'm not going to say anything about it," Ftorek said. "I talked to the refs about it, but I'm not going to say anything else about the referees."

Devils players didn't stay as reserved when commenting on referee Stephen Walkom.

"The play should have been whistled down right away," Lyle Odelein said. "When a guy's cut like that, doesn't know where he is, the ref doesn't blow the whistle, I'm sure you won't see him in the playoffs. You've got to make that call."

"If we lost 10-0, I wouldn't care." Bobby Holik said. "But when your linemate or teammate gets hurt like that, and there's nothing done about it, that's just beyond comprehension. I can't express how I feel. ... My blood pressure is higher than it's been in a long time because of that."
