Wings Beat Pens In OTArchived from 1999-2000 season. | |
Sergei Fedorov showed his appreciation of the NHL's new 4-on-4 overtime format by scoring 36 seconds into OT as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2.
Fedorov scored on a hard shot that trickled in between the legs of Pittsburgh goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin. "I just tried to shoot it as hard as I could," Fedorov said. "I was going to try a backhand shot, but I'm glad I was able to get a shot between his legs." Martin Lapointe and Nicklas Lidstrom also scored for Detroit. Lidstrom made a spectacular move around Penguins' Alexei Kovalev before shooting the puck in over Aubin's left shoulder. "They had a forward back there. I didn't know that he'd step up like that," Lidstrom said. "When he stepped up, I just tried to get out of the way and get by him." Jaromir Jagr and German Titov scored for Penguins, who have only three victories in 14 games. "When you're trying to dig yourself out of a pit like the one we've put ourselves in, this was a good effort, a working man's effort," Penguins coach Kevin Constantine said. "This was a good step for us." |
