Yashin Suspended For SeasonArchived from 1999-2000 season. | |
The Ottawa Senators backed up their threat to get tough with holdout center Alexei Yashin by suspending him for the rest of the season.
"Alexei has been suspended for the balance of this season, including the playoffs," Senators general manager Marshall Johnston said. "We will not consider a trade for Alexei." Yashin, who is training in Switzerland, has refused to report to the Senators unless they renegotiate the final year of his contract. He was due to earn $3.6 million. The Senators maintain that Yashin still owes them a season. "Under the terms of his standard player contract and the collective bargaining agreement, Alexei is obligated to deliver one more season of play. His restricted free agency will arise only when that obligation is met." Earlier this month Johnston reportedly faxed a letter to the star center informing him to honor the final year of his contract by Nov. 8 or be suspended for the season. Tuesday, Johnston made good on his promise. Johnston also said that the team might seek money from Yashin. "The extent of financial damages suffered by the club as a result of Alexei's breach of contract will be clear at the conclusion of the season," Johnson said. "At that time, the club will take appropriate action through the arbitration procedure, set forth in the collective bargaining agreement, to recover these damages and will be supported by the league in this action as well." |
