Milan Hejduk scored with 1:43 left in overtime as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Dallas Stars 4-3. After the goal Hejduk dove on the ice and made swimming moves towards the red line.

"I was so happy, I didn't really know what I was doing," Hejduk said. "I was out of my mind. It was an important point for us, just what we needed right now."

Joe Sakic also scored for Colorado and Patrick Roy made 29 saves as the Avalanche increased their lead in the Northwest division to four points over Edmonton.

"I thought it was a very exciting game. There were a lot of scoring chances for both teams," Roy said. "I felt real sharp today and thought I was moving well within the goal. The next two games are very big. We have Chicago tomorrow and San Jose Wednesday, and if we win those games we're going to be in very good shape."

Mike Modano scored a first-period goal for the Stars, who had their unbeaten streak stopped at six games.

"We missed a number of great opportunities today, but I was happy with our performance overall," said Stars coach Ken Hitchcock. "At times, it was a very strong game defensively and there were a lot of good elements to today's game. Colorado is desperate for points and they played like a team that needed points."

The game had a playoff atmosphere and echoes from last year, when the teams met in the Western Conference finals.

"It's always a low-scoring game with Dallas," Sakic said. "Both goalies played well and it had a playoff feel. The two points were big for us because we're in such a logjam (for conference playoff seeding)."
