Leafs Beat Pens In OTArchived from 1999-2000 season. | |
Mats Sundin scored two goals, including the game-winner 27 seconds into overtime and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2.
"I just went for the net and Jonas gave me a great pass," Sundin said. "It's a big win for us. We knew Pittsburgh was going to come in here and play us tough." But the win was a costly one to the Leafs as their leading scorer Yanic Perreault had his left forearm broken on a slash by Penguins goaltender Tom Barrasso in the second period. "It hurts to lose a player like Yanic. He's been playing so well for us. We're going to need to step up and try and fill the spot," Sundin said. Toronto goaltender Curtis Joseph was highly critical of Barrasso's slash and urged him to be suspended. "When you see a guy slash a guy up high, it's hard to think he's going for the puck," Joseph said. "It should be reviewed." Toronto continued to play strong at Air Canada Centre winning their 12th at home, most in the league. "I think we've established a good home game," Sundin said. "It was nice (to get the goal). It's nice to see at home we're finding ways to win." The Penguins continue to struggle in overtime, going 0-4-3, and are 0-5-2 when tied after two periods. They also have been hapless on the road, going 1-8-1 in their last 10 games. "It was a pretty good point on the road," Penguins coach Kevin Constantine said. "We deserved a point based on our effort against a good team. It's still tough to lose in OT." |
