Penguins Exorcise the DevilsArchived from 1999-2000 season. | |
Alexei Morozov scored a hat trick in the first period and Jaromir Jagr had a goal and two assist as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the New Jersey Devils, 7-5, giving Mario Lemieux his first win as an owner.
Martin Brodeur was kicked out of the game in the first period for slashing Matthew Barnaby in the legs with his stick. Brodeur didn't think he hit Barnaby hard, but referee Paul Stewart called a match penalty. Chris Terreri replaced Brodeur in the Devils' net. "It was pretty hurtful," said Barnaby. "He hit me pretty hard, trying to take his revenge out. Maybe he was trying to change the game. He was a little frustrated with the goals that went in." Brodeur said he had no intent to injure Barnaby and didn't think he will be suspended. "If I really swing at all, he was so exposed I really could have hurt him," Barnaby said. Jiri Slegr, Robert Lang and Alexei Kovalev also scored for Pittsburgh who also had to play most of the game without their No. 1 goaltender. Tom Barrasso left early in the first period and was replaced by Peter Skudra, who made 18 saves. Brad Bombardir, Bobby Holik, Jason Arnott, Brian Rolston and Sergei Brylin scored for New Jersey in its home opener. |
