Tomas Kaberle scored the game-winner with 1:35 left in the third period as Toronto beat New Jersey 3-2 to even the Eastern Conference semifinal series.
"We didn't sit back and go, 'Oh my goodness, let's just get it to overtime,'" Toronto center Darcy Tucker said. "We wanted to score the next goal. Curtis Joseph played a great game making 34 saves as Toronto was outshot 36-22 for the game. Jonas Hoglund and Darcy Tucker also scored for the Maple Leafs. "They have been getting a lot of shots in this series and he has been battling," Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin said of Joseph. "He makes the key saves and motivates us. There is no doubt he is the key to this team." "He's the No. 1 goaltender in the world," Tucker said. "He can win games for you and he stole one for us tonight." Jonas Hoglund and Tucker also scored for the Leafs, who reclaimed home-ice advantage. "Going back home 2-2 is big," Leafs coach Pat Quinn said. "Being down 3-1 is not fun. And the odds are you don't come back from it." Scott Gomez and Claude Lemieux scored for the Devils, who suffered their first home-loss in the playoffs. "Tonight I thought we had some passengers, some guys who weren't playing the way they are capable," New Jersey coach Larry Robinson said. "It was because of Marty we kept it close. But I think they think that we're playing at home, the other team isn't going to show up, and we paid the price for it." Game 5 is Saturday night at Toronto. |
