The New Jersey Devils rallied twice back from one-goal deficits to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3, giving them a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal series.
Four different Devils scored in the game that ended in several fights, started by Leafs Darcy Tucker and Devils goalie Martin Brodeur, while disappointed Leafs fans pelted the ice with garbage. "He plays the game hard. He went after me a few times in the game. He'd skate right by my crease and try to touch me, not really take me out but just to bug me," Brodeur said. "When the game ended, he was right there. I kind of gave him a little push. I don't know why he dove, because the game was over." "I got four or five crosschecks to the back of the head standing in front of the net," said Tucker. "Then, at the end of the game, I'm on the ice and (Brodeur) sticks the end of his stick in my back and jabs me with it. I guess if he wants to do that, I'm going to run him over next game." Rookie Scott Gomez had two assists with spectacular passes. He seems to have regained his form after coach Larry Robinson threatened to bench him. "Larry, when we talked, he said some players react differently when they're (struggling). He had confidence, sticking with me in the lineup," Gomez said. Game 6 is on Monday at New Jersey. |
