Joe Nieuwendyk scored 12:10 into overtime to give the Dallas Stars a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche Tuesday night. Dallas now leads the Western Conference finals 3-2.
Nieuwendyk deflected a shot by Richard Matvichuk under Patrick Roy's right arm into the net for the game-winner. "We had some good luck there," Nieuwendyk said. "It seemed like the only way to get to the net is to outrace a guy. I was able to do that and just got my stick on it." Brett Hull and Jere Lehtinen also scored for the Stars, who can wrap up the series in Game 6 on Thursday in Denver. "A minute after the game, our dressing room was very quiet," Stars coach Ken Hitchcock said. "We know what kind of battle we're getting into when we go back to Colorado for Game Six." Jon Klemm and Milan Hejduk scored for the Avs, who went 0 for 4 for on the power-play tonight and 1 for 18 the last three games. "There's definitely frustration given the number of opportunities we had and weren't able to bury," Joe Sakic said. "We're still confident, we've got to keep doing the same things and maybe they'll go in." Colorado outshot Dallas 31-20, but Ed Belfour was again brilliant in the Stars' net. "He's got a strong focus," Stars coach Ken Hitchcock said. "He has to be the difference for us if we expect to beat Colorado." "This series is about two of the greatest goalies in hockey history, and you need to have the perfect shot or tip to beat them," Avalanche coach Bob Hartley said. |
