Who needs Alexei Yashin? The Ottawa Senators beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 Saturday night and improved to 4-0 for the season.
Radek Bonk scored a goal and had an assist on Wade Redden's game-winning goal. Bonk has three goals and four assists in four games. "I'm happy to be able to help the team win some games. It's the best start of my career," said Bonk. "We're great as a team, working hard. Alexei was our best player, so everybody has to step up their game." Yashin, who has one year remaining in his contract that would have paid him $3.6 million this year, is demanding an extension of $11 million for next season and $12 million in 2001-02. He has refused to join the team if he doesn't get the new contract. Bonk is Ottawa's new offensive threat and he is responding well. Bonk opened scoring with a power-play goal in the first period and later won the face-off leading to Redden's game-winner. "If you get enough pressure, enough shots, something will go in," Redden said of his first goal of the season. "Bonk did well on the draw and when Dackell passed it back, I just fired on the net and it went in." The Maple Leafs had an apparent tying goal disallowed with 7:41 left when referee Mick McGeough ruled Igor Korolev batted the puck with his hand before Garry Valk scored. "I don't think it was a letdown, I think we got a real good lesson on how to play hockey," Maple Leafs coach Pat Quinn. "This Ottawa team is in your face all night, they were as good or better at any time we played them last year." |
