Thrashers Beat FlyersArchived from 1999-2000 season. | |
For one night the struggling Atlanta Thrashers feel like the Stanley Cup champions. Goalie Norm Maracle stopped all 26 shots for a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. It is Atlanta's first NHL shutout.
"This was huge for me," Maracle said. "I've been struggling the last couple of weeks. Now, my confidence is back up and hopefully it will continue." "That was his best game of the season," Atlanta coach Curt Fraser said of Maracle. "There was never a doubt every puck that went to the net he had total control of. There was no rebound and no second chances. He was very sharp." Dean Sylvester scored the only goal early in the third period on a rebound off Patrik Stefan's wristshot as the Thrashers ended Philadelphia's six-game winning streak. "Maxim (Galanov) took a shot from the point and Stef was right there," Sylvester said. "The rebound happened to kick right out to me and I just shot it back into the net. It just happened to go underneath his arm." The crowd of 18,571 was the largest for a hockey game at Philips Arena and standing room tickets were sold for the first time in team history. "That was a real education tonight in playing a real solid team and finding a way to win a close game," Fraser said. "It was good for us." It was the third time the Flyers were shut out this season. They were 0-for-3 with the extra man, snapping their streak of four games with a power-play goal. "We didn't handle the puck very well tonight," Flyers captain Eric Lindros added. "We didn't play very well. We've definitely got to pick it up Saturday. They had great goaltending tonight." |
