Maple Leafs Win Fifth StraightArchived from 1999-2000 season. | |
Yanic Perreault and Steve Thomas scored two goals each as the Toronto Maple Leafs prevailed in a Northeast Division showdown with a 4-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators.
"The last two weeks for me have been great," Perreault said. "I felt even better than before I got hurt. Most of all, there seems to be good chemistry with my linemates." The Maple Leafs increased their division lead to seven points over Ottawa and moved within three points of New Jersey for the best record in the Eastern Conference. Even with a bigger lead in the division, Toronto coach Pat Quinn is stressing caution. "The only lock we have is one to put on the dressing room door so nothing gets taken," said Quinn. Toronto won their fifth straight game and have only one loss in the last ten (9-1). Andreas Dackell and Sami Salo scored for Ottawa, which outshot Toronto 42-25, but was denied further scoring by goaltender Curtis Joseph. "Their goaltender was the difference tonight," Ottawa coach Jacques Martin said. "They're a team with a lot of momentum. We competed but now we just need to regroup." Toronto defenseman Bryan Berard suffered a serious injury to his right eye when he was hit with a high stick by Ottawa's Marian Hossa in the second period. Berard fell on his knees with his head to the ice as a pool of blood grew under him. "The puck was bouncing, I took a swing at it and felt it hit something," Hossa said. "Then I saw him down and saw the blood and I knew it was serious." |
